Our History

2018

Novar Gardens Sports Club Incorporated

Because of the interest and increased membership of Pétanque the club changed its constitution at the Annual General Meeting in May 2018 to include that sport. The club then became registered as the Novar Gardens Sports Club Incorporated.
Pétanque was established within the club as another social outlet. That sport has grown since to the point where major pistes were established, not only within the club boundary but also in the park to the west of the clubhouse, with the council’s full support and a further grant from the State Government.

Club and Grounds Work

Through a generous grant from the State Government and financial support from the City of West Torrens the club was able to erect a retractable shade cover over the whole of the bowling green, replace fencing and erect two umbrellas in the forecourt.
In 2016 “Work for the Dole” programme brought in people to paint the clubhouse and environs, erect a BBQ shelter and provided seating and tables in the forecourt.

Two separate turf greens were in place when the Club relocated but as the membership increased it was decided that they were becoming inadequate.

At the end of the 1991/92 season it was agreed to replace them with a combined larger single green finished with sand filled synthetic surface. This surface was completed and ready for the 1992/93 pennant season.
After six years the surface had worn and was replaced by a much superior sand filled surface in time for the 1998/99 season.
In 2009 this surface was replaced with needle punch carpet.

1990

Outdoor Lighting Installed

In 1990 outdoor lighting was added and night social bowling established, attracting bowlers from other clubs and the community in general.
Its lease was due to expire in 1989 and an opportunity arose for relocation to premises at 489 Anzac Highway, Novar Gardens, which the Holdfast Ladies Bowling Club was vacating. A lease for those premises was signed with the West Torrens Council and the Club moved to its new location and officially changed its name to Novar Gardens Bowling Club, Incorporating in 1989.
It was felt that the existing clubhouse was not up to high standard that members desired and so was demolished and replaced with a new structure. The Club was fortunate to have as members some of the best tradespeople and enthusiastic helpers who willingly gave their time and skills to build the new clubhouse. As a result the new clubhouse was completed in late 1989 and opened with a brief ceremony of celebration.
